Indian food is one of my guilty pleasures. I reside outside the heart of Manhattan, but always make an effort if in the area to eat Indian food when I am in the city. As someone whose daily commute often takes her to the hub of NYC transit, Grand Central Terminal, Shalom Bombay, located 3 blocks south at 344 Lexington Avenue (between E 39th and 40th Streets), is the perfect stop between the bustling day and busy commutes.
I’ve eaten at Shalom Bombay about a half a dozen times in the past several months. Given that I barely venture out to eateries and can’t say the same for any of the eateries located much closer to me, this is a big deal. Each time, I’ve really loved the meals. Whether it was for the $12.95 all you can eat buffet with food whose names I don’t remember (I really try) or the multiple dinners, I actually have never been disappointed.
Shalom Bombay is one of two (three) restaurants in the NY/NJ area to carry Kosher meat. In the past, I’ve always had the Indian vegetarian. I’ve never had Indian meat or chicken until my first visit. It’s been a really great experience. Every single meal I’ve had has been great. Here are my favorite dishes:
- Chicken Tikka Masala: If you look online, you’ll find this recipe from the Shalom Bombay chef too. But it’s much better in the restaurant.
- Beef Do Piazza: This is a really great beef dish.
- Lamb Korma: This is a really sweet and savory dish.
- Moong Daal Fudge: I love this dish. It’s fantastic.
- Onion Kulcha: If you like onions, this bread and onion option is great.
I’ve also really enjoyed meeting and getting to know the wait staff. It’s a great restaurant with an ambient feel, a great atmosphere, good music, and really good food. Check it out the next time you’re in the neighborhood.
