PopChips™ – Parve & Dairy

I received a sample box of Popchips as part of a promotion via the social media measurement tool Klout (a Klout Perk).

Popchips

So what are Popchips™? According to their website “we came up with a chip like no snack aisle has seen (or taste bud has tasted). That’s because we found a way to pop all the flavor in while keeping fake stuff and more than half the fat of fried chips out. Thanks to the magic of popped.” To get your brain around the idea of these chips, think of puffed rice breakfast cereal and apply that to a potato chip.

The result is a super crunchy chip, that explodes with both potato flavor and seasoning flavor when you munch down on them. If you’ve ever tried fritolay’s Munchos you’ll find them some what similar in texture, but not as greasy.

The following flavors came in the sample box:

  • original potato – parve
  • barbeque potato – parve
  • sour cream & onion potato – dairy
  • cheddar potato – dairy
  • sea salt & vinegar potato – parve
  • salt & pepper potato – parve
Not included in the sample back was a seventh flavor of parmesan garlic potato.

I personally tried all the flavors with the exception of the cheddar and sour cream & onion (both dairy). My wife and kids did give these Popchips a try. Hands down we all found the barbeque the best flavor. Coming in number 2 for my wife and kids was the sour cream & onion. My number two was the sea salt & vinegar which ranked number 3 for the rest of the family.

The barbeque flavor was sweet with just the right amount of flavoring. Comparable to any barbeque flavored chip out there.

I found the sea salt & vinegar perfectly seasoned (not too strong a vinegar flavor unlike many chips out there).

Based on my families opinion, the sour cream & onion was just perfect while the cheddar was a bit on the salty side.

The original were delightful with just a hint of salt.

My least favorite was the salt & pepper. The flavor was overwhelming pepper, not making the chip spicy hot, just not enjoyable after eating 3 or 4 chips. I’m sure there will be some out there that will love this flavor, but I’m not one of them.

Popchips also makes the following claims “no fake colors, no fake flavors, no preservatives, no fluorescent orange fingertips, and no wiping your greasy chip hand on your jeans. No, really. We only use ingredients you can feel good about eating. And we leave out the bad stuff, like hydrogenated oils and msg, that give snacking a bad name. Because Popchips™ brand chips have no preservatives, make sure to get a good chip clip after opening the bag to keep our popped chips fresh. Or better yet, just eat them all at once.” Based on our experience it’s all true.

Overall I give this product a 4 out 5 for a combination of flavor & originality. I must point out that I have since gone out and purchased several bags at the local grocery store.
