Amy’s Macaroni & Soy (Kosher Dairy)

Amy's Macaroni & SoyAmy’s Macaroni & Soy CheezE as the name implies uses a soy based cheese substitute to make the cheesy like sauce. This soy product contains caseinate (a dairy derived protein) making this product not suitable for vegans and garnering it a kosher dairy hechsher (OU-Dairy).

I prepared the macaroni & soy according the packagings instructions for the microwave which took a total of approximately 5.5 minutes. The end result was something resembling very close to the actual picture on the packaging.

My only concern with this product is that the serving contains 21% of the daily recommended amount of sodium while providing little other nutritional benefits (15% Daily amount of calcium and 8% iron). It also contains 23% of daily recommended fat intake of which 10% is saturated.

Now for the the critical part the taste. First off the macaroni noddles came out perfect. The texture of the sauce was slightly thick and sticky. The taste was much better than expected. Anyone who’s previously tried soy based cheese substitutes (like Tofutti Soy-Cheese Slices) knows they don’t taste 100% like regular cheese. However, Amy’s did a great job of masking the fake taste and it was very pleasant to eat. Did it taste as good as the real cheese and macaroni I make for my kids? The answer is a simple no, however, given that it’s lactose free and taste good I’ll be buying  it on a regular basis.
