Amy’s Shepherd’s Pie – Kosher Parve

Picked up Amy’s Shepherds Pie the other day when it went on sale for 1/2 price. I’ve never been a big fan of Sheppard’s pie  even the ones that contain meet, but the  combination of organic ingredients plus a picture that looked appetising made me want to give it a try. (please note the packaging of my Shepherd’s Pie was different then the one depicted here).

According to ingredient list in contains potatoes, tomatoes, garbanzo beans, mushrooms, celery, onions, leeks and carrots, soy milk, turnips, safflower oil, sea salt and garlic. It doesnn’t contain any egg or egg products, so it’s good for vegans as well. I must admit that the portion of vegetables that came out of mine wasn’t  close to the picture on the lable. I had a hard time finding even a single recognizable mushroom or part there of.  I was able to spot a few pieces of carrot and potato (or were they turnip). The pie is parve (dairy free) and gluten free. This makes for an ideal convenience food for both lactose and gluten intolerant people.

The single serving sized pie contains a reasonable 160 calories, 4 grams of fat  but an unreasonable 20% of your daily recommended in take of sodium. Still when you compare it to other prepared foods,  that’s par for the course. Further on the positive side, there zero cholesterol and it does contain of your daily recommended intake of: Vitamin A 30%, Vitamin C 30%,  Calcium 6% and Iron 15%. Overall a healthy entrée.

I prepared Amy’s Sheppard’s Pie in the microwave according to the provided instructions. It took about 4.5 minutes (and I didn’t want to wait the 45 minutes to make it in the oven). At the 4.5 mark, the liquid from inside was bubbling over the mash potato topping.

Now the most important thing the taste. I first put my fork into the mash potatoes and they were yummy. I must admit some of the best (from frozen) mash potatoes I’ve ever had. The filling was a bit on the bland side and very runny. I had expected the tofu be used like a ground meat in the pie, but all I found were a few pieces of tofu. Overall the filling more closely resembled a stew topped with mash potatoes then it did any Sheppard’s Pie I’ve ever seen.

Overall I give it a 4 out of 5 on our scale. 1.0 for convenience, 2.0 for nutritional value and a  1.0 for taste.
